Nick's thoughts
During my days in the East, I now see that I stumbled along like a drunken man. I was dragged into a web of lies and corruption that I couldn't escape from. Maybe I was fortunate that Gatsby was killed. After that, everything became clear to me again. Everyone I associated with was immoral and corrupt. To them money was not a problem; it was nothing to them. Its lure had almost drawn me in for a moment. Perhaps if things had been different I may have taken Gatsby's job offer and never awoken from the dream of the East. I was happy to return home to the west. It was a long awaited homecoming. Gatsby had had money and powers. He was the "song of God". That's not me, however, I'm just someone from the west and nothing could change that. By John |
