Gatsby had huge parties every week but he was the only person separated from the party...his own party.  He was a westerner among easterners.  His whole life he tried to create a persona of an easterner.  Jaymes Gatz was a westerner.  Jay Gatsby was a westerner trying to be an easterner.  His life was dedicated to being an easterner and his life was ended because of the same reason.  When Gatsby stretched his arms towards the green dock light of Daisy's house he was stretching also to the east.  He was reaching not only for Daisy, but also to life as an easterner.  He was reaching for his lifelong goal.  His dream was symbolized by that green light, and it was just across the bay.  It was within site and almost within reach, however, he was killed before he could cross that bay and reach his goal.
