The west was a land full of opportunity and dreamers.  As westerners, all the characters possessed this characteristic, but some such as Tom, Jordan, and Daisy had lost it somewhere along the way.  With all their money, they lost a part of themselves that had made them westerners.  Gatsby and Nick could be considered the only true westerners in this story.  Gatsby was born in the west but dreamed of something bigger and better for himself in the East.  His goal was to become and easterner, but his hard word and determination to achieve that dream was the characteristic that distinguished himself as a westerner rather than an easterner.
