Eyes-- Commentary | |
The eyes are a common symbol used in The Great Gatsby. Poetically described as "the windows to the soul", F. Scott Fitzgerald uses them to represent a higher power, they are considered a godlike symbol. Eyes as used in this novel tend to be very judgmental witnesses; they not only see but also criticize and analyze. The symbolism Fitzgerald uses for the eyes is most apparent in the description of the discarded optometrist's billboard, often referred to as "the eyes of TJ Eckleburg" | |
