This illustration shows a cracked rearview mirror,
distortedly reflecting an image of Daisy.
The broken mirror links the drawing to the car wreck motif in The
Great Gatsby. The
symbolism behind the drawing is that, in constantly looking at and
revering the past and dreaming of regaining the Daisy he knew as a young
soldier, Gatsby destroyed his chances with her in the present.
He destroyed his dreams and ideals by worshipping the past, just as
one might wreck a car by always looking in the rearview mirrors instead of
at the road ahead. |
