Upon Gatsby's death, Nick speculates that Gatsby had come to some kind of realization. A realization of the cost of living too long "with a singular dream," - Gatsby's own life. Gatsby, while laying in his pool, experiences memories and scenes surrounding the creation of his own identity, and is led back to who he once was. To end his life was perhaps the only way to pay for being able to create and live in his own world, formed by boundaries and personas he had attempted to create for himself.
