Grotesque

Pg. 169 “He must have looked up at an unfamiliar sky through frightening leaves and shivered as he found what a grotesque thing a rose is and how raw the sunlight was upon the scarcely created grass.”

-The word Grotesque is used here as describing how the rose looked.

Pg. 105 “But his heart was in a consistent, turbulent riot.  The most grotesque and fantastic conceits haunted him in his bed at night.”

-Here Fitzgerald uses the word Grotesque, as describing the nightmares Gatsby was experiencing.

-In my opinion, I think that the word was used on page 169 to express his thoughts on a real life nightmare that Gatsby was experiencing, while on page 105 it was only a nightmare of the mind.
