“[Tom] came down with a hundred people in four private cars and hired a whole floor of the Seelback hotel, and the day before the wedding, he gave [Daisy] a string of pearls valued at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
The large value of these of piece of jewelry acted as a seal of their marriage, to prevent Daisy from changing her mind.  The expensive necklace also reminded her that Tom was able to support Daisy in their high-class life, something Gatsby could not offer at the time.
