Pearls are white

The color white is a main theme throughout the whole book and also an important idea in our paragraph.  Pearls are white, and therefore relate to our paragraphs.  Pearls are mentioned the night before Tom and Daisy got married (pg. 81).  Tom gave Daisy a pearl necklace this night, which could be a sign of purity.  The pearls and the color white, in this case, are around the time Daisy received a letter from Gatsby (pg. 81).  This use of the color white may relate to Gatsby or what is to come of Gatsby and Daisy in the future.

The color white is also used to describe Daisy’s childhood (pg. 24).  This could also be a symbol of purity and carelessness in Daisy as a child.  Then Gatsby comes along during her childhood and changes her totally pure life.  She meets Gatsby when she is still technically in her childhood, so white could be a symbol of Gatsby or his and Daisy relationship.  Lastly, the way that Tom refers to the ‘white race’ as being superior gives a new impression of white (pg. 17).  White could be a symbol of power or control, the way Tom feels the white race should be towards other races.
