...a drunken woman in a white evening dress. |

This woman may represent Daisy before her wedding to Tom. Nick tells us, through Jordan's words, that on the day before her wedding, Daisy became drunk and very depressed, threatening to call off the wedding and clutching a letter in her hands. The jewels in the hand of the drunken woman may represent the letter that Daisy had clutched, the contents of which we never discover, although it probably came from Gatsby himself. The fact that the woman is being carried on a stretcher and her hand flops over the edge of it gives her a lifeless quality. This carries over to the fact that no one knows her name. |
A Poem The martini glass touched her lips like a cold hearted kiss and she tilted her head back to drown down her soul in the thin shimmer But there in the crowd she lost herself she was so alone amidst the smiles and disembodied eyes so she clutched onto the glass and swallowed the last of its contents To late she realixed her mistake and her last breath slipped from her lips. As she fell, the glass slipped from her hand and shattered upon the cold hard floor. |
