The four men carrying a stretcher may instead represent the carrying of a casket to a funeral. This conclusion can be made because the men are wearing dress suits and walk along solemnly, just as people would be if they were attending a funeral. Because the men are all alone on the street, this could represent the fact that no one came to Gatsby's funeral. If the four men symbolize the carrying of Gatsby's casket, then perhaps the woman on the stretcher that they carry could represent that when Gatsby died, part of Daisy died along with him. The lifelessness of the woman could support this theory. |

A Poem Four men in turn they walk they stalk a moon in a deep set sky she spoke a word in turn her lips they wrote a song she sang but the words don't sing in tune to the beat of their beating quick feet |
