Boats against the current

boats, found on pages 104 and 124

This idea expresses trying to move forward while being pushed back.  It shows how Gatsby was never able to move on and was always reminded of his past.  It was on a boat where he changes his name form James Gatz to Jay Gatsby.  This shows how during this turmoil of going against the current he tries to draw father away from his past by creating a new person for himself.
During the luncheon at Daisy's with Gatsby, Tom, Nick, and Jordan, they see wings of a boat moving against the "blue cool limit of the sky".  This is right while  Gatsby shows his house off.  His house is another thing that represents that he is not the person he was in the past.  Show the boat at this time refers to this  as part of Gatsby's striving to forget about his origins and backgrounds while there are always things reminding him of it.
