Night

§         At night, Gatsby’s house came alive with people. For what? A chance to find someone that knew Daisy.  These were not just ordinary parties.  Every week food and lawn decorations would come to his door to start the party scene all over again (p44).

§         “In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars (p43).”  This sentence makes Gatsby’s parties seem whimsical and dreamlike.  Blue used as an adjective to his gardens makes them feel more exotic than normal gardens.  They sound as though they would contain tropical flowers and even possibly birds.  Used in this sentence it does not seem to mean sad, as the color blue is usually associated with.  Comparing the people in the garden to moths made them seem like they would move around a lot and not stay in the same spot.  Maybe all the people came towards the light like real moths do.  In the parties the lights could just mean the brightness of Gatsby’s house, as Nick always noticed it was, or it could be Gatsby.  He could have “given off light” as he was positive and his dreams were coming a reality.

§         The cover of the book features a picture with a face in the middle of a night sky.  There are also lights in the background.  These lights could simply be the lights from a big city, such as New York where the story takes place.  They also could have just been the lights and the chaos that would be in Gatsby’s backyard in the weekend.  The night sky makes the face look more mysterious and almost ghostlike because the face is merely outlined against the dark background.

  • The thing that always goes along with night is the nightmare.  This is what Nick was going through after the death of Gatsby.  Not only was the whole thing a shock, but there were reporters and police everywhere and sometimes they gave false reports about him.  Nick could not get anyone to go to the funeral or even take a second to stop by.  When Daisy turned her back on Gatsby it was also a nightmare to him.  He realized that he had no idea what to do with his life, now that his main goal would never happen.  He didn’t know what to do or where to go.  Most importantly, he didn’t know how to get away from the realization of his failed dream that turned into a nightmare.
