THE END Ø
Page 182-183
– this whole passage of ours, deals with
Gatsby’s funeral. It is clearly
the end of Gatsby’s life and relationship with Daisy. Ø
Page 104 –
“…and to this conception he was faithful to the end.”
The phrase of Gatsby being faithful to the end clearly has a
connection with the funeral, which is the end.
This phrase also foreshadows a death in the future.
Therefore, there is a connection with our meaning of death,
funeral, and the end. Ø

6 – “No-Gatsby turned out all right at the end;” This again is a
direct connection to the funeral, which is the end of Gatsby’s life.
However, the positive feeling that we are given in the beginning
of the book, seems to be contradicted in the end when nobody shows up to
his funeral. Maybe we have
a different opinion for the meaning of “the end”.
Maybe Fitzgerald is considering something else or some other part
of Gatsby’s life to be “the end”.
How can he be all right in the end, if nobody cares enough to
attend his funeral?! Maybe
Nick is giving us his true opinion and feelings ahead of time in the
first chapter. This
statement by Nick/Fitzgerald has the ability to raise many questions as
to what the meaning of “the end” really is.
