Though I was curious to see her [Tom's mistress] I had no desire to meet her -- but I did. I went up to New York with Tom on the train one afternoon and when we stopped by the ash-heaps he jumped to his feet and taking hold of my elbow literally forced me from the car. "We're getting off!" he insisted. "I want you to meet my girl." Page 28 |
Tom was obviously not thinking of the consequences when he
decided to introduce his wife's cousin to his mistress.
In fact, he was careless to get involved with a mistress in the
first place. He completely failed to consider the repercussions of such
actions to her marriage before getting involved. It wasn't until he was in danger of losing Daisy that he
realized that he didn't want to lose her, only to soon go back to taking
her for granted. He had
cheated on her in Santa Barbara with a chambermaid, returned to her, and
then cheated on Daisy with Myrtle. Therefore,
it is likely that Tom will continue to be careless and be unfaithful to
Daisy, despite his promises.
