Science Fiction Movies

Star Wars (1977)

Director:   George Lucas

Writer:    George Lucas

Main Actors:    Mark Hamill,   Harrison Ford,   Carrie Fisher

"A long time ago in a galaxy far far away" a director decided to make a little movie set in outer space.   The force was with director, and he made a movie that probably changed science fiction forever.   The characters include one very bad bad guy, a strangely noble space pirate, a young hero, a princess, and two goofy robots and oh yeah a wise old man.   Of course, you probably already know about all this.   I did actually find one person who has never seen this movie.   Hopefully he has seen it by now, and hopefully you have too.

The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Director:   Irwin Kershner

Writers:    George Lucas,   Leigh Brackett,   Lawrence Kasdan

Main Actors:    Mark Hamill,   Harrison Ford,   Carrie Fisher

The second movie made in the Star Wars series.   In some ways it is far superior to the original.   It added the depth to the original characters now famous.   A few new characters were also added including a short green little fellow.   While the next in the series was good this is the movie where the Star Wars series peaked.   It has only been downhill since this movie's conception.

Blade Runner (1982)

Director:   Ridley Scott

Writers:    Philip K. Dick,   Hampton Fancher,   David Webb Peoples,   Roland Kibbee

Main Actor:    Harrison Ford

One of the biggest cult film scifi classics.   Do not worry you do not have to be in a cult to watch this movie.   Its just this movie has a cult following, which usually means that it appeals to a small yet very faithful bunch of fans.   Set in the far away future, Harrison Ford's character is a policeman who hunts down robots that look and act human.   The few robots he is trying to capture are just trying to live longer than they are programed to run.   The question I guess is if they are alive or not.   But in reality I do not know all the meanings of this movie.   There is great debate about everything in this movie if you look for it.   The movie is very dark and will definately not appeal to all.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Director:   Stephen Spielberg

Writers:    Stephen Spielberg,   Jerry Belson,   John Hill,   Matthew Robbins,

Main Actor:    Richard Dreyfuss

By far the best movie about alien abductions ever made.   It is beautifully filmed and parodied often thanks to a mountain in the shape of mashed potatoes.   Or is it mashed potatoes shaped like a mountain.   Richard Dreyfus pays the obsessed lead character wondefully.   Then there is the sound.   Da duh doo duh dooooooo.   Spielberg in one of his earliest movies shows his science fiction prowess that continues to this day and shows that he can direct more than just shark tales.

E.T. (1982)

Director:   Stephen Spielberg

Writers:    Melissa Mathison

Main Actors:    Dee Wallace-Stone,   Henry Thomas,   Peter Coyote,   Robert MacNaughton,   Drew Barrymore,   K.C. Martel

Aliens can have a heart and not have a desire other than wiping humanity from the face of the earth.   No aliens jumping out of peoples chests here.   Just a heart warming film about a young boy who makes friends with a being from outer space.   What can I say Spielberg does it again.

The Terminator (1984)

Director:   James Cameron

Writers:    James Cameron,   Gale Anne Hurd,   Harlan Ellison,   William Wisher Jr.

Main Actors:    Arnold Schwarzenegger,   Michael Biehn,   Linda Hamilton

This movie along with its sequels are Arnold Schwarzenegger's signiture films.   No doubt he will be forever plagued in his future endevours by these films (The Governator).   "The Terminator" provides us with one of the more bleak visions of our future.   One where machines/computers have taken over the planet and man is but a pest to be destroyed.   Well it does not actually take place in the future.   It takes place in the present.   The machines send back a terminator to eliminate the leader of a future resistance to the machines.   The future leader just has not been born yet so the machines plan to eliminate the mother.   To attempt to ford this attempt the resistance sends back a man to fight this terminator.   That is basically it.  . It is extremely well done and presents an interesting despite its bleakness vision of the future and is well worth a watch.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

Director:   Robert Wise

Writers:    Harry Bates,   Edmund H. North

Main Actors:    Michael Rennie,   Patricia Neal,   Hugh Marlowe

One of the true classics of the science fiction film genre.   It is both science fiction and social commentary.   A little bit about the plot.   An alien lands in the middle of Washington D.C. and proceeds to attempt to contact the people in authority of this fair planet.   Once he figures out this is unlikely to happen he escapes into the general population in search of a way to get his and the films message out.   What was his message you may ask?   He warns against the greatest fear of the time.   Though the message is a little dated it is still hard hitting.
