Six Steps of Being a Mentor

Think of a mentor as a Cheerleader, using these six steps:

  1. Build a personal rapport with the new member.

  2. Discuss the new member’s needs and expectations.

  3. Translate the new member’s needs into Toastmasters programs — CTM, ATM, etc.

  4. Set specific goals and objectives for the new member (Be realistic!)

  5. Discuss the effort and commitment needed to meet these goals.  (Again, be realistic!)

  6. Monitor the new member’s performance and progress.  (You may even have to supplement the evaluations the new member receives at the club meeting with a personal evaluation.)
