GROVER CLEVELAND ALEXANDER
Grover Cleveland Alexander is frequently mentioned with the greatest pitchers of all time. "Ol' Pete" battled personal demons, mainly alcoholism, but still dominated the game for nearly three decades. 190 of his 373 career wins and 1,410 of his 2,199 career strikeouts came with the Phillies. He won 30 games or more for three straight seasons (1915-17). In 1915, he won the first World Series game in which the Phillies ever played. Like many players of his era, Alexander battled poverty and personal problems after his retirement. He died a month after seeing the "Whiz Kids" in the 1950 World Series. Later, the man who was named after a president had his life portrayed by a future president (Ronald Reagan) in a Hollywood film ("The Winning Team").
