ED DELAHANTY

Ed Delahanty was not only one of the best hitters the Phillies have ever had ... he was one of the best hitters baseball has ever had. His .346 career average is the fourth highest in history. He hit over .300 12 straight years and over .400 three times. He hit four home runs in a game on July 13th, 1896 in a game the Phillies lost, 9-8, to the Chicago White Stockings. Ed Delahanty was the oldest of five brothers, all of whom played in the major leagues. Like many players of his era, Delahanty struggled with alcoholism, and it's believed to have contributed to the mysterious circumstances surrounding his untimely death in 1903. He was involved in an altercation on a train traveling through upstate New York. The conductor ordered him off the train. He tried to chase the train and either fell or was pushed off a railroad trestle. He plunged into the Niagara River and was carried over Niagara Falls.
