CHUCK KLEIN

This great slugger played 15 years with the Phillies (1928-33, 36-39, 40-44). He was the club's all-time home run king with 243 at the time he retired. He is still #1 among Phillies' left-handed hitters. Critics said he benefitted from the short right-field porch at the old Baker Bowl, but his power numbers were impressive throughout his career. In 1932, Klein had a season that few have ever matched. He led the Phils in batting average (.348), hits (226), runs (152), doubles (50), triples (15), home runs (38), total bases (420), and stolen bases (20)! Klein followed that up with a Triple Crown the next year (1933). On July 6th of that year, he also became the first Phil ever to bat in an All-Star Game. Klein still holds National League records for most total bases (445) and most RBI's (170) by a left-handed hitter in one season. Klein closed out his career as a pinch-hitter during WWII. After that, he ran a bar in Philly for a time. He endured some tough financial times and after suffering a stroke, he returned to his home town of Indianapolis. Cancer claimed Klein at the age of 53 on March 28th, 1958.
