The Four Basic Shapes of Two-Dimensional Design

An artist or designer can create illustrations, letterforms, graphic designs and logos by using the four basic shapes of two dimensional design. The shapes are illustrated and identified below.

Designs or illustrations are created by using the shapes in different sizes and in combination. In order to be an effective designer, the student must see the geometry in objects. For example, letterforms like the letter "T" are created by putting together two rectangles. The letter "A" is formed by two triangles and a skewed rectangle. An eye can be illustrated using circles, parts of circles, and a small triangle. Look at the illustrated examples below.

The basic shapes are seen in the tools that are used for design. When artists worked on drawing tables, they used t-squares, triangles, compasses, and circle templates, to draw out their designs. These same tools are seen in illustration and page layout software. The artist uses a rectangle tool and circle tool to create their designs.

The key to success for beginning designers lies in their ability to break down objects into their most basic shapes or forms. From that point designs can be constructed by using those forms.
