Safety Policies and Agreement / Student Contract

Instructions:    Read the following carefully and print it out when you have finished. Be sure to sign the bottom of the form after you print it out. Use the copier to make a copy of it for your notebook. Then, turn in one copy to your instructor. When you have completed this safety  section, YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE A TEST!! TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!! If you fail the test, YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT UNTIL YOU PASS.

1.     The foremost safety rule is to follow any and all instructions and safety rules from your instructor. REMEMBER, the "ABC" of Safety. (Always Be Careful)

2.     Do NOT operate any equipment without first asking the instructor's permission.

3.     No horseplay (pushing, shoving, touching) in classroom or shop areas.

4.     Know the location of fire exits and fire extinguishers.

5.     Return ALL tools to the cabinet IN THEIR PROPER PLACE.

6.    Never throw anything to another student. This includes pencils, erasers, tools, etc.

7.     NEVER breathe the fumes of an unmarked container.

8.     Allow fresh air ventilation when using solvents. Open a door or window or use the portable air cleaner.

9.     ALWAYS USE SAFETY GOGGLES WHEN HANDLING CHEMICALS AND SOLVENTS!!! Use these when cleaning screens or if you are in the vicinity of anyone cleaning a screen or otherwise using solvents. Safety goggles are NOT THE SAME AS SAFETY GLASSES!! Safety goggles completely enclose the eyes and can be worn OVER eyeglasses.

10.   ALWAYS wear vinyl, rubber, or latex gloves when handling solvents. DO NOT HANDLE SOLVENTS WITHOUT SKIN PROTECTION!!!

11.   Return all covers on ink containers and solvent containers. Open containers needlessly expose others to second hand inhalation of fumes.

12.   Clean all ink knives and squeegees. The remnants of inks and chemicals on these objects can expose others to fumes and also ruin expensive clothing.

13.   Try to place any rags with solvents on them in a red, metal covered container. This is a serious fire hazard and may result in a serious fire hazard through spontaneous combustion (a chemically induced fire requiring no spark or flame).

14.   DO NOT THROW PAPERS OR SCRAPS ON THE FLOOR. Others may slip on these and become injured.

15.   ALWAYS clean up any spilled water on tables or on the floor. This can be a serious hazard.

16.   NEVER CUT AGAINST THE PLASTIC EDGE OF A TOOL. This would include rulers, t-squares, triangles, etc. It damages the edge of the tool.

17.    NEVER CUT ON A DRAWER UNIT TOP, WOODEN TABLE, OR DRAWING TABLE. This includes the teacher's desk, computers, the copier, or computer tables. The only place to cut is on top of thick cardboard or the glass surface of a light table.

18.    ALWAYS ask before going into the darkroom.

19.    ALWAYS wear safety goggles and gloves when mixing any photo-emulsions or other chemicals.

20.    NEVER turn on the lights when you walk into the darkroom, unless you are certain no one else is in there or you can not see safely. If you do turn on the lights, you may ruin someone else's work or expensive supplies.

21.    NEVER expose a photostencil unless you are absolutely certain that all light sensitive materials have been closed or put away where they will not be struck by the light.

22.    When handling containers of emulsion or other chemicals, keep a firm grip, and keep your little finger extended under the container. ALWAYS slide containers toward the back of a shelf or counter top so they will not fall to the floor if spilled.

23.    When washing out photostencils, keep electrical items away from the sink.

24.    If an electrical device should fall into the sink or a tray of water, NEVER, EVER reach into the sink to pull it out. NOTIFY THE INSTRUCTOR IMMEDIATELY! A Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) circuit is installed, however, they do not shut down the circuit! It is still possible to be electrocuted with these devices installed!
