International Student Admission
UAS is an institution rich is culture. Students from around the world experience Southeast Alaska through University programs. International students must meet all requirements for admission to the university and their selected degree program. The process for applying for international admission is detailed below. For further information, please feel free to contact Tim Schroeder, UAS-Sitka Student Services Coordinator at (800) 478-6653 or (907) 747-6653, or Greg Wagner, Director of Admissions at (800) 478-9069 or (907) 465-6239.
To apply for admission:
1. Apply for and receive a passport from your native country. Photocopy the passport, and send copy to UAS (Tim Schroeder, Sitka Campus, 1332 Seward Avenue, Sitka, AK 99835).2. Complete the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Students must score at least 550. Official results should be sent to UAS. If you are already in the U.S. on an educational exchange, you may substitute the UAS English Placement Exam for the TOEFL.
3. Complete a University of Alaska Application for Admission. You must be admitted to a degree program at UAS, with intent to take credit courses full-time during each term. English as a Second Language (ESL) courses do not qualify.
4. Pay $35 application fee to UAS.
5. Send official high school transcript to UAS.
6. Students who have attended foreign institutions and plan to transfer these college credits to UAS will need to provide an official statement of educational equivalency written in English. These statements are produced by independent credential services. For a list of these services, see page 17 in the academic catalog. Be sure that the credential service sends official results to UAS.
7. Complete and submit a financial statement. UAS is required to verify that international students have sufficient funds to meet estimated expenses for the full period of study, including medical insurance and transportation to and from the United States. After submitting the financial statement, you may be asked to provide additional documentation (W-2’s, income tax statements, etc.)
8. Once you are accepted to UAS, you will receive an I-20 form from the Admissions Director in Juneau. This form certifies your admission to a U.S. university.
9. Take the I-20 to the nearest American consulate or embassy in your native nation.
10. U.S. customs will issue you an F-1 Student Visa (if possible, you should request a multiple entry visa).
11. Bring the I-20 form and the F-1 Visa with you to the U.S. when you attend the University of Alaska Southeast.
12. When you enter the U.S., you will receive an I-94 attachment to your passport.
13. Check in with Tim Schroeder (see address above) when you arrive in Sitka.
14. If you have not already done so, you will need to get medical insurance before registering for courses. Student medical insurance is available at cost at the Information Counter.
15. UAS-Sitka will photocopy your Visa, passport, I-94 and insurance verification, and fax them to the admissions office at UAS in Juneau.
