How do I appeal an instructors actions?

Instructors provide quality instruction while ensuring accountability in learning.  It is your instructor's responsibility to ensure that you are accurately and fairly evaluated.  Occasionally, students and instructors differ in their opinions of this assessnent, or in instruction methodology.  When this happens, you have the right to appeal your instructor's actions.

1.  Visit with your instructor.  Most conflicts between students and instructors are resolved quickly with a simple discussion.  Many are a result of misunderstanding, rather than a difference of opinion.

2.  Visit with your advisor.  Your advisor is trained to help you and your instructor reach a higher level of understanding and/or consensus.

3.  Submit a letter of appeal.  If you have visited with your instructor and your advisor, and still are not satisfied with the results, you may appeal your instructor's actions to the Dean of Students.  To do so, write a letter explaining the situtation, and address it to: Bruce Gifford, Dean of Students, UAS Juneau, 11120 Glacier Highway, Juneau, AK 99801.  You may visit with your advisor for assistance in drafting your letter.

4.  The Dean of Students will contact you for further information and/or to inform you of his decision.
