How do I request an exception to policy?

The process of requesting an exception to University policy is called the Petition Process.  Common academic petitions include requesting to modify degree requirements or to withdraw from classes after the deadline.  Common financial petitions include requesting a refund after the deadline.  Academic petitions are evaluated by the Petition Committee in Juneau (a UAS-Sitka representative serves on this committee by audiconference).  Financial petitions are evaluated by the Sitka Campus Director, in consultation with the Business Office and the Coordinator of Student Services.

To submit a petition:

1.  Visit with your advisor.  Your advisor will help you articulate your request, and will explain to you in detail the petition process.  For Advising Center Contact Information, click here.

2.  Complete and return the Petition.  Blank Petition Forms are available from the UAS-Sitka Admissions and Records Office at the front counter, or from the Distance Education Office (1-800-478-6653, ext. 757).  The petition must be returned to the Sitka Campus Admissions and Records Office.

3.  Pay special attention to the "Justification" section.  This section represents your only substantial opportunity to express your case in writing.  You can never include too much information, but too little information may result in denial of your petition.

4.  You will be notified of the petition decision after it has been reached by the appropriate person or committee.  This process may take a few days, or may take up to a few weeks.

5.  If your petition is denied, you may have the right to appeal that decision to the Provost or Chancelor.  Contact your advisor for more information.

6.  If you have any questions regarding the Petition process, please contact Tim Schroeder at (907) 747-7703, or 1-800-478-6653.
