Placement Testing

Many courses at UAS are sequential.  For instance, Math 054 (Basic College math) leads into Math 055 (Introductory Algebra) which leads into Math 105 (Intermediate Algebra) which leads into Math 107 (College Algebra) which leads into Math 200 (Calculus).  Since students start at different skill and comfort levels, it is important that they start with the right course.  No student wants to take a course which is too easy or one which is too difficult.  To help you evaluate which course is right for you, placement tests are given in English, math and computers.

English.  The ACT Asset exam for English placement takes approximately two hours.  It involves a multiple choice section and an essay section.  Scoring for the English placement exam is conducted by UAS English faculty.  Depending on the time of year, it may take between three days and two weeks to receive your scores and placement.  Local students may take the English placement exam in the Adult Basic Education Office.  Call 747-7785 for available times.  Distance students may take the English placement exam in their own community.  To arrange a distance English placement exam, you will need to identify someone in your community who will volunteer to serve as a proctor.  Once you have done this, contact the Distance Education Office at (800) 478-6653 Ext. 721 to arrange the exam.  If you are having difficulty locating a proctor, the Distance Education Office will be happy so offer suggestions.
