Placement Exams
Placement exams are required before registering for English, Math, and some CIOS classes.  To arrange placement tests in your community, contact the Distance Education Office (see above).  These exams are designed to tell you which courses you are academically prepared to take.  Think of it this way: you probably do not want to take a course which is way over your head (in which case you are likely to fail) or a course which is way under your level (in which case you will be bored).

Visit with an Advisor
If you are a full-time, degree-seeking student, if you are receiving financial aid, or if you are new to UAS-Sitka, it is important that you visit by phone with an advisor.  Call the Advising Center at 1-800-478-6653 to arrange your appointment today.  Evening and lunch-hour times are available.

2.  Know Tuition and Fees.
What is “Tuition?”  What are “Fees?”
The basic cost of attending a particular course is called “tuition.”  Tuition is designated per credit hour.  In general, tuition pays for your instructor’s salary, space to hold the class, administrative costs to deliver the course, and services available to you as a student.  Tuition at UAS-Sitka is $79 per credit for lower division courses, and $90 per credit for upper division courses.  Tuition does not include fees, books, housing, transportation, etc.  Most colleges, including UAS, also charge specialized fees in addition to tuition.  These fees could include: lab fees, technology fees, distance education fees, and student government fees.  Fees are generally utilized to offset the cost of user-specific charges or services.

Tuition
Lower Division: $82 per credit
Upper Division: $93 per credit
Graduate: $184 per credit

Depending on the course, tuition rates may be higher for students who are not Alaska residents.

Note: Tuition does not include student government fee, technology fee, or lab/material fees.  Visa and Mastercard are accepted for tuition, fees and bookstore purchases.  The University reserves the right to change or add to its fees at any time. Fee assessments are subject to audit and correction, and any such adjustments will be made following the close of late registration. Students will be notified by mail of any changes.

3.  Review the Sitka Schedule and select your courses.

You may receive a copy of the UAS-Distance Delivery Schedule by contacting the Distance Education Staff (see above).  It is also available online here.

4.  Register for courses.

What is “registration?”  Registration is simply the process of signing up for your classes.  Be careful not to confuse registration with admission (which is the process of signing up for and being accepted to a specific degree or certificate program).  To register, contact the Distance Education Office (see above).  You may provide your registration information over the phone.  If you have any questions, these staff members will be happy to assist you.  Depending upon when you register, you may be required to submit payment.  If you are taking classes towards a degree, or if you are receiving financial aid, please visit with your advisor before registering for courses.

Late  Registration
Students registering for any course which has already met at least once must obtain the instructor’s permission before registering for that course.

Errata Sheet and Cancelled Classes
Occasionally, classes must be cancelled or rescheduled due to low enrollment or schedule conflicts.  Such changes are publicized in an Errata Sheet.  These sheets are available at the front counter.  Please check an Errata Sheet before registering to ensure that your class has not been altered.

Attendance Policy
Regular attendance is expected in all classes.  It is the responsibility of the student to establish to the instructor’s satisfaction the validity of an excuse for absence and to negotiate acceptable arrangements for completing required coursework.

5.  Pay Tuition and Fees
Payment Arrangement and
Fee Drop Dates
At UAS-Sitka, you may register for classes before arranging for payment, or you may register and pay at the same time.  If you elect to register before paying, you have until the Fee Drop Date (listed below) to arrange payment or to receive a payment deferral from the Coordinator of Student Services.  If you will be receiving financial aid, you must receive a payment deferral prior to the Fee Drop Date.  If you have not paid payment arrangements by the Fee Drop Date, you will be withdrawn from all classes.

FEE DROP DATES
1. If you register prior to August 4, you are given until 5:00 p.m. on August 4 to arrange payment.
2. If you register after August 4, you must pay for classes (or arrange payment) at the same time you register.
3. Drop Dates do not apply to Continuing Education classes.  Payment for Co-ed classes must be received at the time of registration. There is a 7-day advance deadline to drop a Co-ed class if you wish to obtain a refund.

Payment Methods
You may pay your account by contacting the UAS Cashier at 1-800-478-6653, Extension 767.

Deferral Agreement (Monthly Payments).  If you wish to arrange monthly payments, you must receive a Payment Deferral Agreement from the Coordinator of Student Services.  Monthly payment plans generally require you to pay 50% down, and to complete your remaining monthly payments prior to the end of the current semester.  Most Payment Deferral Agreements must also be approved by the Business Manager.

Senior Citizens Tuition Waiver.  Alaska residents 60 years and older may be eligible for a senior citizen tuition waiver.  Exceptions are for classes in which student work spaces may not be available, and self-supported classes, such as Continuing Education courses.  Senior citizens using tuition waivers may register at any time, but are subject to space availability.  This waiver does not apply to specialized classroom supplies, lab or technology fees, or the student government fee.  Waiver also does not cover any books required for the course.

Agency Payments.  If a federal or state agency is paying for your education, you will need to submit a purchase requisition from that agency when you register.

6.  Order Books.
There are several different ways in which you may receive your books.  For each class, check the line regarding books in the schedule.  Some books will be sent to you automatically, while others you will need to order yourself.
