Distance Education at UAS: A Success Story

Vivian Martindale

University of Alaska Southeast distance student Vivian Martindale has been awarded the Cortland Auser Undergraduate Student Paper Award offered by the National Association for Ethnic Studies. This is an annual competition in memory of Dr. Cortland Auser. The NAES Undergraduate Student Paper award carries a prize of two hundred dollars. Award-winning papers are automatically considered for publication in Ethnic Studies Review, the NAES journal. Papers are judged on the basis of originality, content, and creativity. Vivian was also invited to present her paper at the at the 30th Annual NAES Conference in April 2002 in Vancouver, BC.
The title of Vivian's paper is "Moving Mountains in the Intercultural Classroom." The paper was written for Speech 330, Intercultural Communications, offered by Professor Susan Koester of Juneau. The paper examines the differences in communication styles between the Alaska Native student and the Euro-American educator specifically pertaining to the University classroom setting.

The National Association for Ethnic Studies was founded in 1972. It provides an interdisciplinary forum for scholars and activists concerned with the national and international dimensions of ethnicity. The Association welcomes scholars and teachers at all educational levels, students, libraries, civic and governmental organizations, and all persons interested in ethnicity, ethnic groups, intergroup relations, and the cultural life of ethnic minorities. As a non-profit corporation, NAES provides a vehicle for interested members and donors to promote responsible scholarship and advocacy in the diverse fields of enquiry, which constitute ethnic studies.
