Our Mission...
Beginning in 1988, the University of Alaska Southeast has undertaken a special mission to support and extend the practice of traditional Northwest Coast Art in Alaska. This program offers a rare opportunity to study with the masters. Through demonstration and studio experience, you will deepen both your understanding and experience of traditional Northwest Coast Art. Please join us for this very special educational and cultural experience.

ART 181: Study of the basic elements of traditional Northwest Coast Design. Includes the use of ovoids and form lines to develop traditional as well as contemporary designs. Methods for transferring designs to other media, such as wood or cloth.
ART 281: Continued study of traditional Northwest Coast Design principles and elements.
ART 381: Advanced study of Northwest Coast Designs with an emphasis on both traditional and contemporary applications. (This course may be repeated for credit.)

NW Coast Basketry

ART 282: An introduction to basket weaving practiced by coastal Indians of Alaska. Projects will include twined or plaited weaving of spruce roots or cedar bark to produce a basket or plaited hat, with particular attention to traditional standards of design.
ART 382: Intermediate study of basket weaving, with emphasis on false embroidery, more complex weaving techniques and mastery of endings.
ART 482: Advanced study of basket weaving, with emphasis on design. (This course may be repeated for credit.)

NW Coast Carving: Spoons

NW Coast Carving: Bowls

Students will carve bowls or small portrait masks from alder. Recommended prerequisites: One carving course and one course in Northwest Coast Design.
NW Coast: Silver Carving Techniques

Materials Fee: $30
This course is an introduction to Silver Carving Techniques. It includes application of design, tool making of engravers, cutting angles of engraving tools, methods of carving formline design, practice of carving, and carving a copper bracelet. A history of carving in NW Coast native Art will also be covered.
