Since his death, the importance of Commander Maury and his works, publications and dedication to the Confederacy have resounded, not just in this country, but around the world.  He is memorialized in monuments, most familiar to us probably on Monument Avenue in Richmond, VA.  However, the first known memorial to him is here, in Nashville, TN, where his portrait was painted in fresco on the ceiling of the Library of the State Capitol in 1857.
