MILAN - MILANO
In an effort to try to get something on these pages, I am going to just let you all see the photos and give an explanation later as I get time.
The Duomo in Milan, as far as I know, is the second largest cathedral in the world. It is magnificient. Unfortunately, I was preoccupied by the trip and by some guy handing me a handful of bird seed (which caused about 30 pidgeons to suddenly swarm me and my daughter) and by being intimidated by this huge building. I didn't take nearly enough photos. The day was also sort of cloudy and I was still alittle "shutter shy". Most importantly, I didn't realize that visitors to the Duomo could got up to the roof of the building.
This was an angle carving I found on the westface of the Duomo. It made for an interesting image. This other fellow also eppears to be a stonemason or some other working a that was present at the construction of the Duomo.
These two photos are of a carving inside the Duomo. One might assume that it is a carving of the Madonna. I have read somewhere that this may actually be Mary Magdalene. I have included a couple of detail images below.
Above are detail images from the above photos. The first detail is of the snake that "Mary" is holding in her right hand. The second detail is of her holding the skull. I turned the skull upright. The last photo is a "negative" version of the middle detail. I love skulls and thought this would be an interesting image.
This photo, in all truth, was a mistake. We were't allowed to use flashes in the Duomo. So I tried to take some photos, but my hand isn't steady emough for the low level shots. I tried to throw this photo away several times and each time I went back and put it back in the album. Actually, it's a pretty cool shot. I hope you all agree.
