EVIL DORK

Evil Dork was a solo performance piece written, directed and performed by Dan Telfer. In 2000 and 2001, Dan performed it many times: in workshops, auditions (parts of it), festivals, open mics, with Great Beast Theater company, with ToastGun Productions, and even at ImprovOlympic's Slug Fest.
It should be noted that calling it "solo performance" is bending the rules. Brian Berta wrote and played an instrumental score at every show with his fancy guitar. He was always there, and was just as much a part of the performace.
Ahem, now, in first person...During the run of ToastGun's "Ding!", I was informed that one of the actors from David Ives' "Words, Words, Words" would be unable to make a show. Since "Ding!" was not exactly the kind of show that had understudies, I decided I would use some of the stuff I'd workshopped in my Solo Performance class at Columbia and claim the open spot on the schedule myself. Thus on July 16th, 2000 was the first performance of Evil Dork, where I was unsure about my lines and nervous as all get out (but I was lucky enough to have a stacked house of friends and family). In August of 2000 I was still a performer at ImprovOlympic Chicago. They had a late night Thursday solo showcase called Slug Fest that all performers at ImprovOlympic were welcome to sign up for. Back then, there weren't half as many takers as there seems to be now. So I snatched up a spot. On August 24th, 2000 I performed a slightly longer, slightly more rehearsed show to a medium sized and not-so-stacked audience. I thought it went great though. The only problem was that I thought the show was free (you'll notice on the flyer) and many of my super-poor friends were surprised to find out they had to pay $3 to get in. Yes, my friends are that poor. The other solo performer that night (Joe Canale) and I got to split the box office, but I felt guilty (I didn't know it would involve money at all) and gave it all to Brian Berta.
