San Francisco Bay Trail
San Francisco and San Pablo Bays, California

November 11, 2003.

A planned recreational corridor currently consisting of 240 miles of developed pathways encircling the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. The trail provides easily accessible recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, including hikers, joggers, and bicyclists.

Leaving the San Francisco Ferry terminal.

I began this trip with a ferry boat ride across the bay to the northern shore.

Inside the ferry boat to Larkspur, cruising past Alcatraz and Angel Island.

Passing Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill.

Past San Quentin State Prison before docking at the Larkspur terminal.

I begin biking the trail by crossing a bridge over a small inlet near the town of San Rafael heading southward along the western shore of the bay.

Along the trail, several views of San Quentin beyond the Corte Madera Ecological Preserve.

Mostly uphill around Ring Mountain.

On Paradise Drive heading south toward the coastal town of Tiburon.

A brief stop for a picture along Paradise Drive overlooking the bay.

Tiburon offers some nice views of San Francisco from across the bay.

Another ferry ride from Tiburon to Sausalito....

....with a brief stop at Angel Island State Park along the way.

I arrive at the picturesque town of Sausalito on the western bay shore.

The next stop is the Golden Gate Bridge.

A pause atop the Golden Gate.

Across the bridge looking back.

Getting late, and still a ways to go....the setting sun lights up the San Francisco skyline ahead.

By late afternoon I've left the bridge far behind as I'm travelling through the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

I reach Maritime Park in San Francisco at sunset.
