Mount Haleakala Volcano Maui, Hawaii February 20, 2004.
Mount Haleakala is a dormant volcano that last erupted over 200 years ago. The drive to the summit can take up to 3 hours depending on weather and traffic.
Watching the sun rise over the clouds from the summit of a volcano is a unique experience. Haleakala means "House of the Sun," after a legend that tells of the demigod Maui who climbed to the top of the volcano to capture the sun with a lasso.
The winds on Haleakala can be exceptionally strong. Wind chill temperatures can reach below freezing.
The volcano's summit is 10,023 ft. above sea level and the crater is large enough to contain the entire island of Manhattan, including the skyscrapers.
