Waianapanapa Caves
Maui, Hawaii

February 19, 2004.

Waianapanapa State Park is located a short distance from the Hana Highway on the northeastern side of the island. The park includes the black sand beach, the caves, natural pools, and lava tubes.

The black sand beach of Wainapanapa is made up of volcanic stone worn down into tiny smooth pebbles by the ocean tides.

A small opening in the rocks adjacent to the beach leads into a large hollow lava tube that opens into a rocky cove along the northern coast.

The underground caves contain freshwater, cool and just right for swimming.
