The tragic, brutal killing of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming brings to the fore the need for greater education as to the real nature of homosexuals. A legal basis for prosecution of hate crimes against gays, and the prohibition of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, are necessary steps in the right direction, but they are not nearly enough.
That homosexuals are not diseased and are not by nature pedophiles needs to be gotten across to the general public. Homosexuality is no threat to family life. Indeed, it is homophobia which tears families apart,

especially when it leads to casting children out, bereft of love, and subject to all the perils of street life.
St. John’s Unitarian Church has treated gays and lesbians as fully deserving of the dignity and worth that by right belong to all human beings. It has done so for a great many years. Would that all churches did likewise. Jesus said nothing about homosexuals: His message of love was for all.
