People, not laws will stop hate crimes

I am unequivocally against hate crimes. I also see as appallingly racist that it took a white person’s being the victim before some people would become so vocal about passing more hate-crime laws.

Legislation does not stop crime: People stop crime. We must not tolerate crime, whatever the motivation. Some people are using a young man’s death for their own ends and are not actually interested in promoting all human rights.

As individuals, we must start by eliminating from our own personal speech and

conversation all biases and prejudices, even - and especially - in jest. If most hate crimes are committed by those 22 and under, it is due to poor guidance and mentoring on the part of the adults with whom they associated. We must educate our youth to believe in and defend "liberty and justice for all" - not just certain select groups.
