Hate, prejudice thrives locally

It is remarkable that the tragic death of Matthew Shepard apparently did little to deter the number of letter writers the past week who wished to declare or attempt to justify their homophobia. Letter writer Martin L. Clock "Gays don’t deserve special status protection" [Oct. 17] even announced that since gays don’t have children, if homosexuality was inherited it would no longer exist. Why let science and genetics stand in the way of irrational rhetoric?

Homosexuality is an innate characteristic of some people.

Unfortunately, hate and prejudice is still an acquired characteristic in many people.
