Law has limits

Concerning John Freie’s letter (The Post, Oct. 20) about the murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming, I have a problem understanding what more the law can do than it is already doing in capital murder cases. The two accused killers are facing the death penalty...and in Wyoming,, at least, will most likely get it if convicted. So, how should the law up the ante? Death and a day? Pipe in John Tesh music while they’re on death row?

Just please don’t day more education dollars, for deaths like Shepard’s very clearly shows who’s more in need of a good dose of reality education.

In the film "Grand Canyon" I recall Danny Glover’s comment to Kevin Kline, about the thugs he’d just rescued him from in south central Los Angeles, "...They are just animals looking for something to eat. You mean nothing to them...other than as a meal."

While society at large has just as hard a time understanding any barbaric event as gays do about those that target their community, there does seem to be a sense of reality in Straightsville that seems to be missing in many gays’ world view. Animals do exist out there...always have and always will.

So while the law can put those animals to sleep, it cannot provide a protective shield around those who want to be able to carry raw meat amongst a family of grizzlies.
