We write in great concern at the recent murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming. We are members of the Gay/Straight Alliance at the School for Creative and Performing Arts. The goal of our organization is to promote, through education and example, a school environment that encourages acceptance of diversity in whatever form it may take.
Despite a supportive school environment for our diverse student population, notices for our meetings are often mutilated or torn down. People were killed ever the same issues, so why are we surprised?
The recent passage of Issue 3, the 30 percent of tee-age suicides that are related to issues of sexual orientation, and all the Matthew Shepard-like fatalities that are not reported in the national media, show us our gay and lesbian youth are feeling more isolated than ever.. |
Our Gay/Straight Alliance is simply that - a partnership of straight and gay students working responsibly together to help create safe school environments for all our students.
We ask the Cincinnati community to step forward and courageously address our many levels of diversity instead of running away from the great opportunity to help students join together over differences.
