It is a big mistake when we minimize HIV's contractibility [re: Readers' views, "Don't infect kids with disinformation," by Ken Schad, "Coughing, sneezing doesn't spread AIDS" by Deb Neumann and "Gays have every right to work in food biz" by Dan Benz (all published Oct. 26)].
It is, after all, a contagious disease. The dentist is forced to wear a mask and rubber gloves. The police take the same precautions. Something as simple as a paper cut can introduce infected blood into another person's system.
Society, in the past has always made use of quarantining for many of the contagious diseases, and should consider using the same methods today for AIDS, if necessary. No

one is suggesting that it be used for quarantining on the basis of sexual orientation, as Ms Neumann insinuates. Nor does anyone imply that "concentration camps" should be set up for homosexuals, as Mr. Benz writes.
But we should all strive to eschew all emotionalism from this dangerous issue, and bring all the common sense to it as we are able.
