As far as is known, the Black Ajah have been in existence for nearly as long as the Aes Sedai themselves have been, although the populace has believed its existence to be only a story. Even now, they are still believe to be a falacy; many Aes Sedai refuse to admit that they exist.
No one knows how they are chosen, simply that the Forsaken (or Chosen) come to them during their lives, whether chosen at random or drawn by some inherent evil or darkness in their souls. Black Sisters can come from each and every Ajah, even though the vast majority of those exposed are from the Red. Once they swear their allegiance to the Great Lord of the Dark, all former ties (including the Oaths sworn with the ter'angreal Oath Rod) are broken. Thus, a Black Sister can tell a lie, harm another creature, or make weapons of destruction should the need and desire arise. Each Black Sister serves her master much as any normal Darkfriend would. They follow a ranking system similar to other Darkfriends, a ranking system based solely on the whims of whoever is commanding them at that particular time. No Sister knows more than a handful (if that many) of the others, namely for protection should one of them be detected. Only the Sister that sits highest among the Black knows more than a few.
