| << I cannot really agree to the idea to build a new factory in the community that I live in firstly because it will definitely involve environmental destruction and increase in pollution. This will cause us health problems sooner or later. Although the factory will bring about some benefits to the community, the issues of health and environment apparently take priority. The factory should not be built for the construction and operation of it, if it comes true, will firstly lead to environmental destruction and raise in pollution level within and near the community. Firstly, in order to build one, we need to clear the land or make the people live there leave their places. The former is the most likely way we take to obtain the land for the factory, which will destroy the natural environment, cutting down trees, changing water course, killing animals that inhibit there and so forth. This is itself bad to the community not only because we lose its intrinsic value but also lose its function to make the air and water clean and places to be relaxed in the nature. Once the factory starts its operation it will produce both air and water pollution that are harmful to human or natural animals and plants. These manufacturing factories these days generally have facility to get rid of the pollutants and make them cleaner before they actually dump the water, soil gasses that are used or produced through the manufacturing processes. However, it cannot be denied that these facilities cannot fully prevent the pollutants spreading from the factories. These pollutants contain harmful chemicals such as heavy metals. Some people might advocate the usefulness of the factories emphasising on its likely benefit to the economy in the community. The factory can firstly increase in the number of jobs available in the community through building and operating it, which will elevate the employment rate and thus benefit the existing residents. The increase in job also attracts people who live outside of the community commute to it to move to the community. This again generates some profits, because the larger population contributes to the economy because the size of local market grows. This works for such business as supermarkets, department stores and any other ones that relate to live of new residents. The increase in the population will also leads to the development of the community in terms of transportation, shopping facilities and so on. Additionally, the tax revenue of the community will increase because of the factory, meaning that the local government can spend more money on welfare and education that improves the lives in the community. In spite of these benefits that can be obtained through the factory, the issue of the environment and health overweigh these benefits in its economy. The health is the most important thing that the community has to be concerned, and the environment protection is important in the recent world where the environmental degradation and protection became too far problematic. Even if the community develops on an account of the factory, if the health in particular is destroyed, it does not do any good to the residents or community. The residents will have to suffer from the pollution and at worst suffer from some symptoms cause by the industrial pollutants. This alone is horrible experience to the residents. They then, move out from the community due to the unsound environment and pollution level. This then disadvantages the economy, exactly opposite to what is demonstrated in the previous paragraph. Thus, it can be reasonably justified that environment and health issues overweigh the benefits in the economy. This leads to a conclusion that we should not build any new factory in the community. |
