I agree with the former point of view. I think university students should attend classes as high school students do. As a student studying medicine at the university, I feel lectures given by faculties are necessary.

Some people may say that making lectures as necessary requirements would disturb the students originality. If the students don't have to attend all the classes, and only attend the classes which they are interested in, the efficiency and activity of the class will increase. There may be no student sleeping during classes. I think it is true. In fact, if the classes become optional, we can enjoy choosing classes. We can attend only our favorite classes. And boring classes will disappear, because everyone does not want to attend such classes. That may lead to the restructuring of university.

But in most universities all over the world, the classes are the necessary requirements. Why? Because most of the students can not choose classes which would be beneficial for them. If the university does not offer any carriculum, students would lose their way and would not come to university. That is a problem. And on top of that, I think all the job need originalities. For example, do students studying medicine need creativities? I must admitt in some sense, it is true. But I can say most of the doctors don't have to be a creative person. I think the most important ability for a doctor is a common sense, not a originality. A doctor must offer his patients the treatment that are common all over the world and that are thought to be safe for the patients. Do you want to be a patient of a doctor who is curious about the truth of the nature? I think a doctor must not be a scholar. So I doubt the university which makes classes as optional.

Finally I want to tell about my university. In my university, we study in a small group that consists of 7 or 8 students. And three times a week we have discussion in our group for 90 minutes. This discussion is not optional, but I think this type of education is different from the ordinaly one. If you say doctors also have originality in their minds, I want to say we train our creativities and activities by conducting discussion three times a week. Some faculty members of my university oppose this curriculum. In some sense, their opposition is true. Because such a discussion sometimes go to wrong directions and we learn nothing from the discussion. In such cases, we feel the ordinaly type of lectures are better. But I want to believe this type of program will be succeeded.
