<< As I am a university student, for me, a good supervisor means a good teacher? In that sense I think the most important quality of a good teacher is not saying too much. I understand teachers know very well about what we learn at our university. And thanks to them, we can study and graduate the university and can get jobs. But I think teachers should not tell their students everything they know. Because by doing so, students will lose their curiosity about studying by themselves. In my university, we have a tutorial hybrid system. In tutorial system, we learn in a small group that consists of 7 or 8 students. And three times a week, we discuss some topics in the group. Each group has a tutor (who is a teacher at our university) and he overview our discussion. But he does not say so much about our discussion. Then, what is a role of him? His role is like a navigator of our sailing, that is he directs us to the right direction. If our discussion goes to the completely wrong way, and he thinks that we waste time for an important matter, he takes us to the right way. So I have said he is like a navigator. Or I think he is like a captain of our ship. Our ship might caught in a vigorous typhoon, or our ship might lose our way and sail to the completely different land. If we sail to the different land, that might not be so wrong. Because we may discover a treasure in the wrong land. But if we lose our way and we can not get any land before we die, that is a problem. So at that time, a tutor tells us what to do. So I think the most important quality of a good supervisor is the ability to know the timing of advising. If he mistakes the timing of advising, there might be a large loss. On top of that, he must know the ability of each student in his group. He must know who is the leader of the group and who is possitive and who is negative. In the discussion, a active student does not necessary lead the group to the right conclusion. Too positive but not thoughtful student may lead the group to the completely different way. So the boss must know the characteristics of the group. And finally, I want to say the important quality that is common to a boss of all types of jobs. That is an ability of decisiveness. I think boss must often make important decision when his followings are lose their way. And such chances will occur many times in a daily life. So the boss must acquire the ability to make the right decision quickly without confusing. And also he must not be noticed by his followings, if he is confused. I think a boss must have a porker face. A boss must be cool whatever problems happened. In that sense, I think my university has many teachers who deserve good supervisors. Thanks to them, I believe we can be good business persons in the future.
