| << I agree with the statement. I rarely make an important decision in my life because such an important matter does not happen so many times. But when I have to make an important desicion, I often tell that to my friends or family. For example, I often discuss with my friends what types of doctor we want to be. Some of my friends say they want to be a primary doctor, and others say they want to be a surgeon. In most cases, the final desicion is made by ourselves. But I think we need someone who listen to our thought and desire. And I think that can be said to be doctors. Since I am not still a doctor, so I can not say exactly how doctors make decisions about their treatement of their patinet. But in my country, it is often said that "Informed Consent" is not fully done. "Informed" in this phrase means to inform the patient of his or her disease very much and offer the possible method of treatement. And "Consent" in this context means to get fully agreement from the patient about his or her treatement. In the United States this "Informed Consent" is sufficiently done. I think the principle of an informed consent is that a doctor should never make an important decision alone. In my country, an important decision of a treatment has been done by medical staffs alone, or even by a doctor alone. This is because doctors think that patients have little knowledge about their disease and its possible treatement, so they should not make any important decision of their treatement. I think this idea is wrong and many people think that this wrong habit must be changed. I think so because when we ride an airplane, do we need to know the mechanism of the airplane? The answer is no. All we have to do when we board on an airplane is to pay the fee. Or when we drive a car, do we need to know how the gasoline acts on cars? The answer is no. All we have to do is only buy gasoline on some stand and handle our car. So I think patients do not have to know about their disease. All they have to is to pay money and lying on their bed. And I think they can have even rights to know about their disease. That is, doctors must inform their patient about their patient about their disease, especially I think what patients are interested in is the possible treatement methods the hospital can offer. So I think a person should never make an important decision alone. And that can be especially true of the relation between patients and doctors. They have to discuss about their strategy to fight against the disease and make decisions together. I think that is the most desirable way of medical treatements. |
