| 22/M/Japan>>> University Student>>> TOEFL CBT 267 (5.0) First, I can not understand what the statement means, because, for me it is natural for companies to pursue their profit. But I notice know, the key point of the statement is "anything". For example, if businesses pollute air in the process of their pursuing profit, does that be allowed? Of course, I don't think so. I think there must be some restrictions for companies in the process of their businesses. In my country, after the second World War, I think most companies did anything they can do to make a profit. We had to reconstruct our nation and most people in my country worked very hard to get a wealthy or even a common life. We were very hungry. Most companies polluted air and water to produce more products in a low cost. As a result, the environment in my country went very wrong, and some people suffered from diseases caused by the polluted air or water. But many people in my country allowed that because they truely needed money and wealth they lost or destroyed in the war. After 50 years have passed, that is, now in my country, we can reconstruct our nation and even gain more power in the world. Our country is said to be second to the United States in finance. And we begin to pay some attention to the environment or nature in the Earth. You may think that we must pay attention to those things more earlier. But I don't think so. I think developping countries don't have to pay attention to the nature. They can have rights to be selfish and to pursue only their profit. I think so because they are poor and they have no time to spare for saving the nature. On the other hand, I think it is developped countries role to protect or pay attention to the environment in our planet. This is because they have enough money to have normal life, so they can have time to think about more than their profits. I think that the relation between developped countries and developping countries, is similar to the relation between parents and their children. When children grow up, they sometimes do many harmful things. They do so because they don't know much about the world around them and they don't understand the rules in this society very much. But we know that children have potential to become more mature and well suited to our society. On the other hand, parents don't behave as their childrens do. That is, they must not act as they want to. They must act with some common sence. It is parents' role to pay attention to our society and make our society a comfortable place to live in. So I want to conclude that businesses in developped countries must pay much attention to the environment. But businesses in developping countries are allowed to do anything to make a profit. And when they become mature countries, they must in turn pay attention to the nature in the Earth. |
