| TOEFL CBT 223 (5.0)>>> 22/F/Japan I am sure that doing homework every day is necessary for students, especially elementary and junior high school students. It is because homework makes students review the contents of every day's lecture more efficiently. I think elementary and junior high school students, especially those who do not go to prep school, are often too inexperienced to know the difference between what they really need to remember and what they need not remember and to make a role to study for themselves. It is not until I entered an university that I noticed the importance of homework. Before graduating at senior high school, I actually hated homework because my schoolteachers were so harsh that I had to do much amount of homework everyday. Then, I had to submit each assignment the next day, even if we did not receive the lecture of the subject. Especially, in elementary school, the worst teachers imposed heavy burden of practicing caligraphy and drilling calculator and on pupils. If we forgot doing it, they scold us and ordered to do more homework as a punishment. Therefore, I used to hope that I would be an adult rapicly because adult have no obligation of doing homework. However, I have noticed that homework, actually lighten our effort to acquire knowledge or skills that we learn at lectures, since teachers chose suitable works for students to review the contents of lecture and memorize the contents effectively. In short, if only students do the works given as homework, they can review the contents effectively and easily understand the lecture with the least effort. As a college, where there were little daily homework except preparing some presentation, I had to chose adequate materials to review each lecture. Therefore I really know how much easier to do homework was comparing with studying by myself. In conclusion, I think that homework is necessary for students to acquire enough knowledge. If homework is something interesting, students are more willing to do it. For instance, after teaching a certain literature work, my mother, a junior high school teacher, tell students to research the author as an assignment. This seems to be much more interesting than what I was forced to do in my childhood. Therefore, teachers should make homework more creative one instead of just something to memorize or practice. |
