| TOEFL CBT 223 (5.0)>>> 22/F/Japan I don't have the driver's license. Therefore, I might not really understand the comfort of driving a car. But I lived in rural area, where residence cannot do everything without car and know the convenience of car. It took about twenty minutes to reach the nearest station or bus stop. However, weighing its danger against the convenience that car brings us, I have to conclude that car causes serious problems. I will explain the harm of car in more detail. Firstly, car cause lots of traffic accident of which tremendous number of people are dying everyday. Do you know how many people are killed by traffic accident? In Japan, about 10,000 people die of car accidents. If only drivers die of the accidents, they might be voluntary harm. But in fact, as you know, pedestrian are sometimes involved in the accidents, caused by miss-driving. Secondly, discharged gasses from automobile leads to air pollution which causes several environmental problems. Harmful components of the gasses can cause cancer or diseases relating to lung or throat or acid rain. CO2 discharged from car have large effect on the global warming or ozon depletion. In this way, car has several problems, some of which we cannot solve hardly without technological innovation enabling car not to discharge pollutants or not to kill anyone. But I admit our life is depending on the convenience brought by such a harmful vehicle. What I want to emphasize is that we should make an effort to reduce the harm, enjoying our convenient life. What we need to do is, I think, to refrain from overusing car. We should utilize public transportation such as bus and train if they are available. |
