Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Advertising can tell you a lot about a country. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. |
22/M/Japan>>> TOEFL CBT 267 (5.0) I can not understand what the statement means. Does "a country" in this contex mean a nation? If so, I think it may be so hard to answer this question. But somehow, I want to try to answer this hard question. In my country, I can see or hear thousands of advertisments on media such as a television, a newspaper, a radio, and so on. On top of that, we can see many advertisements on the Internet. And I think these ads represent our country very well. Since I don't see television so much, and I don't also read newspapers, I want to tell about ads on the Internet. Nowadays, we can see variety of advertisements on the Internet. And I heard from my uncle who live in the United States, that he and his family do one-third of their shopping on the net. When I heard that, I could not believe what he said, because in my country, most people don't use the Internet for their shopping. And we, user of the Internet, rarely click the advertisements on the screen. This is because we don't yet accustomed to pay money for goods on the Internet. Some of us sometimes do auctions on the net, but others are still reluctant to buy goods on the net. So in my country, ads on the net don't have yet so much influences. But I think those advertisements surely represent some features of our nation. This is because ads must reflect the most epidemic things at the time. I mean, if some music is popular among teenagers, ads on that song must be effective. So the record company of the song or retailers of CDs try to make ads of the song. I often hear CNN's news on the net. Before the United States is attacked by some terrolists, the news was very normal. I mean, the news broadcaster of America is alike that of my country. But after the terrolists' attack, the CNN news has changed drastically. On the opening theme of the news, I can see a phrase of "America's New War". When I first saw the title, I can not believe my eyes. We, Japanese can not imagine that such a big broadcast center as CNN has clearly said that a new war has begun. So I think advertisements tell us lots about the situation of the country. As you know, we can suppose lots about the culture of a country from advertisements. But at the same time, we can also get information about the mood of a country from some advertisements. |
